Chains of amino acids (AA). Some amino acids are essential. This means that to obtain this amino acid we depend on dietary intake. Others are also made in our body and are therefore non-essential. Then there is a third category: semi-essential. This concerns amino acids that cannot be sufficiently made by our own body under certain circumstances and for which we are (at least partly) dependent on food.
