Botanical description Yarrow, Achillea millefolium

Yarrow grows on a running rhizome that spreads easily. The stem is upright, woody, angular and hairy.
The flowers usually exist of five white or pink ray florets along the edge and two to nine creme to yellowish tube florets in the centre. They grow in dense, corymbose inflorescences that are 4 to 9 cm in size.
Yarrow seeds consist of little grey achenes. Its leaves are delicate, bipinnate and about 5 to 15 cm long. Yarrow has an aromatic scent.

Yarrow is an ancient medicinal herb containing volatile oils.
According to tradition, Achilles used this plant against injuries, hence the Latin name.
In the past, yarrow was sometimes used instead of hops when brewing beer.
